Sponge titanium

Titanium iron ore (TiFe03) is smelted in a 6300 KVA electric furnace to produce high-titanium slag (TiO2)


Titanium iron ore (TiFe03) is smelted in a 6300KVA electric furnace to produce high-titanium slag (Ti02), which is then processed in a chlorination furnace with oil coke and chlorine gas to generate crude titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4). Afterward, it undergoes separation in a distillation column, where copper wire is used to remove vanadium, resulting in refined titanium tetrachloride. This is then fed into a reduction distillation combined furnace, where magnesium is added for reduction, producing sponge titanium and magnesium chloride. The magnesium chloride is electrolyzed to generate magnesium and chlorine gas for recycling, and the produced sponge titanium is crushed and packaged for shipment.

1. Particle Size

The particle size of sponge titanium is determined after crushing and screening, supplied in two sizes: 0.83mm~25.4mm 90% MIN and 0.83mm~12.7mm 90% MIN.

2. Appearance

The product should be light gray, sponge-like metal, with a clean surface and no visible inclusions. The number of defective sponge titanium blocks in the product (excluding grade 5) must not exceed 0.1% of the total batch. Defective sponge titanium blocks are defined as: overburned sponge titanium blocks; sponge titanium blocks with obvious dark yellow and bright yellow oxidation; sponge titanium blocks with dark yellow and bright yellow traces of oxidation and nitrogen enrichment; sponge titanium blocks with significant chloride residues; sponge titanium blocks with residues; sponge titanium blocks with high iron and associated elements.

3. Packaging

The product is packaged in barrels with a net weight of 75kg~250kg per (piece), using galvanized iron barrels lined with plastic film and sealed with a large diameter cover. After packaging, the barrels must be evacuated and filled with argon.
